Aaru Padai Veedus means, ‘six holy abodes’. The literal meaning is ‘battle camps’. They are the most important centers for Muruga worship. They are located in Tirupparamkundram, Palani, Tiruchendur, Swamimalai, Tiruttani and Pazhamudircholai.

There are many references to these temples in ancient Tamil literary works like Silappathikaram. Thirumurugatupadai, which was sung by the Tamil saint poet, Nakkeerar, in the 1st century CE , gives importance to each temple. All these temples were well established even during the Sangam age (1st to 3rd century CE). Saint Arunagirinathar also praised it in his works, Thiruppugazh and Kandar Alankaram.
